about
This song was loosely inspired by the one-hit-wonder “Egyptian Shumba” by the Tammys. MJ loved the wild and hilarious screaming in it. We didn’t make it to screaming, but we did achieve a delirious layering of melody and a bouncy sense of whimsy we are really proud of. The opening is a Cassie Baker signature of dancing cowbell, and we had a lot of fun playing with the dynamic between Jen’s cool vocal tones and Cassie’s rambunctious “ha-has”.
Like all songs on Glitter & Gore, it is thematically ghoulish: the character in the song is a demon who is being actively kicked out by their possessee. However, the only clue to that it might be a demon and not just a bad boyfriend is the line “you called the priest on me.” Either way, it’s a song that calls you to say GOODBYE to whoever is taking up too much space in your life. Claim your space. Call the priest if you have to.
By the wizarding touch of Justin Douglas, the keys in “You Can’t Stay” is a vintage Farfisa organ!!! Yes, the same sound you hear in the B-52s “Rock Lobster”. We feel so lucky we have had the opportunity to siphon just a touch of that magic!
lyrics
What you think is best
And I know the rest
I’ve packed my bags
Here I go
And you know it’s true
What we used to do
What we used to be
I am sure
I’m not happy here with you anymore
La la la la la la - what you say to me
I’m not happy here with you anymore
La la la la la la - you called the priest on me
and you know the rest
and I know the rest
and you know the rest
this is how it goes
Hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can stay
you can go, you can go
hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can go
you can go, you can go
When I first met you
You were lonely too
It was then I thought
Here I go
At first we had our fun
Under my demon thumb
Yeah, we made a mess
I am sure
I’m not happy here with you anymore
La la la la la la - what you say to me
I’m not happy here with you anymore
La la la la la la - you called the priest on me
and you know the rest
and I know the rest
and you know the rest
this is how it goes
Hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can stay
you can go, you can go
hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can go
you can go, you can go
Hey, hey, hey, hey,
Hey ho, what’s your name what’s your name what’s your name
Hey ho, what’s your name what’s your name what’s your name
Hey ho hey ho hey ho
Hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can stay
you can go, you can go
hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can go
you can go, you can go
Hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can stay
you can go, you can go
hey ho, what’s your name
you can stay, you can go
you can go, you can go
